Jam titans Umphrey’s McGee are making a pass through upstate New York this weekend near the front of their 2017 touring schedule. One of the top acts in the jamband universe right now, they always deliver and are not to be missed for fans of high-octane rock improvisation. The band makes stops in Albany at the Palace Theater and in Rochester at Anthology this weekend on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Unfortunately, Umphrey’s recently released a statement explaining:
“We hear UM fans like improvisation? By definition, you can’t really prepare for improv, much like we weren’t expecting to have to perform a handful of shows without Jake Cinninger.
We regret that Jake has come down with a wicked flu and will not be able to play the next few shows. As a reminder, Joshua Redman will be sharing the stage with us all week long so you will be in for a ride regardless.
We’ll update you when we have additional information, look forward to having Jake back soon, and appreciate your understanding. Onward & Upward.”
Umphrey’s McGee occasionally throws a special monkey wrench into the mix which always seems to up the ante a notch or two. Their UM Bowls have become the can’t-miss events of the year. For both New York shows, saxophone maven Joshua Redman will join the band as a special guest. It isn’t the first time they have joined forces, so you be the judge:
Joining the vets, Arizona upstarts Spafford will open both shows. The 4-piece has been making waves out West but haven’t broken into the east-coast scene much, so it will likely be the first time for many fans to get a taste of their noodly grooves. After Rochester they will fill in the off-night from Umphrey’s McGee tour to play a headlining gig at Buffalo Iron Works on February 1, so perhaps those who get turned on to them in their opening slot will get a quick chance to see them again.
Saturday night, January 28, in Albany, tickets are $24-$29.50 available at the Palace Theater box office or at Ticketmaster. The doors will open at 7pm with Spafford starting around 8pm. Sunday night, January 29, in Rochester, tickets are $27.50 or $30 day of show and are available at the Anthology box office or on Ticketfly. Doors will open at 6:30pm with the music starting at 7:30pm.
