I.Am.Tru.Starr. Bringing ‘Soul Hop’ to Syracuse Saturday

“Growing up in places like where I’m from, kids don’t get the chance to dream properly. I’m chasing mine so they don’t ever have to be timid about chasing theirs.” – I.Am.Tru.Starr

Rochester based emcee, I.Am.Tru.Starr will perform at Funk ‘n Waffles Downtown this Saturday with special guest Stig. Tickets for the 9 p.m. show are $10 and can be purchased at Tru’s website or through Funk ‘n Waffles.

Like many who have grown up in the Rust Belt, Tru, who was brought up in Rochester, believes in using his passion for hip hop and soul to lead by example, “to show the next generation already looking up to him that beautiful things can grow out of what others consider a deadbeat town.”

Saturday, he brings this passion to another Rust Belt town, Syracuse, promoting his latest release hair like basquiat. Afropunk describes the EP as existing “on a continuum between Dilla, Outkast, and Gordon Voidwell.”

Tru’s raw and honest lyrics draw from his past experiences as well as his desire to make the world a better place. His influences range from D’Angelo to Andre 3000 to Donny Hathaway and he describes his sound as film noir meets 2016.

Check out some of his work at his Soundcloud page and hit up the Funk this Saturday for a fresh new face on the hip hop scene, who also happens to be one of our own.
