Arc Iris Visits Rochester Tuesday Night

Arc Iris is equal parts Sun Ra, Fiona Apple and musical theater. Their bio claims they hail from Providence, RI, but their music says Io, Europa and Ganymede. So it wasn’t that far fetched for them to call their second album, released in August, “Moon Saloon.”

The songs on “Moon Saloon” were written by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Jocie Adams while unconnected from the world in a remote cabin in New Hampshire. The recording session lasted just two days. Once in the studio the band was offered an opening slot for St. Vincent on her European tour so the session was cut short. Listening to the impeccably detailed lush soundscapes, it sounds like it took months. The album works like a song cycle that parallels the arc of Everyman’s passage through modern day dilemmas. According to Adams: “The album is meant to be cathartic. There’s an imbalance in everyone’s lives. When there’s often so much going on, we yearn for simplicity.”

Adams is joined by Zach Tenorio-Miller (Gene Ween, A.C. Newman) on keyboards and Ray Belli on drums. Their live show is a spectacle jazzed up with face paint, glittery outfits, and a stage adorned with shiny objects, properly setting the scene for the other-worldly sounds they lay down. This unique musical experience arrives at Abilene Bar and Lounge in Rochester this Tuesday night. Doors will be open at 4pm, with the music getting going around 8:30pm. Tickets are only $5 and will be available at the door.
