Moby Announces ‘Porcelain,’ a Memoir to be Released in June

Electronica singer-songwriter Moby has announced the release of his memoir, titled “Porcelain.”

The book follows a 10-year period of his life, from 1989-1999: living in New York at the start of his musical career, the raving club kids generation, and the underground music scene. “It’s also about New York as it transitioned from being a broken, dirty city to the bizarre and stratospherically expensive city it’s become,” Moby said in a press release announcing the book.

It’s already been given praise from author Salman Rushdie:

The writing is terrific, enlivened by a deadpan humour that makes crazy sense of it all. His ancestor Herman Melville would, I think, be simultaneously revolted and proud.

Moby‘s birth name is Richard Melville Hall, and he hails from Connecticut, where he was raised by his mother. The artist was given the nickname by his parents in reference to the book “Moby Dick,” authored by his said-to-be great-great-great uncle Herman Melville.

Moby discusses the journey of the book in the press release:

i start the book as a sober christian in a tiny loft in an abandoned factory, and i end the book in a very different place. i tried to be as honest as i could be. in Porcelain, i’m not a cool narrator or a disaffected anti-hero, i’m just a clueless and panicked human being trying to make sense of the strange worlds in which i found myself. again, i tried to be as honest i could.

The memoir is slated for release on June 2 by the independent U.K. publishing house Faber & Faber. Bonus add-ons consist of autographed stickers and early clips from the audiobook when submitted with the pre-order forms (only valid in U.S.).
