With multiple appearances at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival and his yearly gigs at Lovin’ Cup, Rochester is pretty familiar with Stephane Wrembel. So they don’t need to be told that while Wrembel rose to fame with his work in the Woody Allen Gypsy Jazz film Sweet and Lowdown, later adding to his Allen-directed soundtrack contributions in Midnight in Paris, his music extends way beyond Gypsy Jazz. His music takes the listener on a journey through time and space. From ancient Europe, Middle East, to current day Africa and America, to futuristic explorations of extra-terrestrial lands yet discovered, Wrembel’s guitar playing is unique, jaw-dropping and beautiful. His band includes Kells Nollenberger on double bass, Thor Jensen on guitar and drummer Nick Anderson.
Since 2002, Wrembel has released seven CDs. His most recent recording, Dreamers of Dreams, was released in fall of 2014 as the follow-up to his international success Origins. He has headlined at Lincoln Center, played major festivals, recorded with mandolin legend David Grisman, toured with master violinist Mark O’Connor and shared stages with everyone from Elvis Costello to Patti Smith to The Roots.
Rochester loves Wrembel, Wrembel loves Rochester. He started his U.S. touring way back when in Rochester, so it holds a special place in his heart. He will be recording this weekend’s shows for a possible future live release.
