In a post announcing the news on the band’s website, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy said it would be fun to do.

”Why release an album this way and why make it free? Well, the biggest reason, and I’m not sure we even need any others, is that it felt like it would be fun. What’s more fun than a surprise?” Tweedy wrote.

The album is available for a limited time.

The Chicago-based band is about to play a three-night run at Union Park in the band’s hometown, then they’ll take a break for a few weeks before heading out on the road for a multi-week tour that will take them up and down the west coast of U.S. and Canada. The alternative rock band is known for playing impressive live shows.

Wilco has eight other studio albums, starting in 1994 with A.M. The last album they released was The Whole Love, which they put out in 2011. Tweedy formed a band with his son called Tweedy last year, and he produced and played on the Richard Thompson album Still, released earlier this year.
