New York bands Native Sun and Psymon Spine teamed up to create an explosive remix of “This Mess.” The release of this remix celebrates the one year anniversary of Native Sun’s debut album Concrete Language.
Native Sun is made up of Colombian-born Danny Gomez (vox/guitar), Justin Barry (bass/vox), Jack Hiltabidle (guitar), and Argentine-born Nicolas Espinosa (drums). Their most recent appearance in New York was opening for Dinosaur Jr. for their free performance at Tompkins Square Park.
The band channels punk and garage-rock’s characteristic urgency through a more melodic, art-rock lens. This unyielding sound underscores lyrics that uphold their stake as a modern punk band. Gomez’ socially charged lyrics focus on real world issues while celebrating eccentricity and nonconformist lives.
The lyrics of “This Mess” channel the spirit of their sound through themes of confrontation and escape. The religious imagery and visceral bodily violence paint the scene as the repeated “I’m breaking out of this mess” gradually transforms from a statement of frustration to a mantra of defiance. The lyrics never settle into a clear narrative, instead presenting fragmented imagery that keeps the song emotionally charged.
The sound of the track as it appears on Concrete Language is energetic, untamed, and raw, offering a nostalgic sound originating from the hardcore punk era from the late 70s/early 80s. The remix keeps the original energy and lyrics, but turns the nostalgic sound on its head. Collaborating band Psymon Spine is known for their unique blend of psychedelic pop, post-punk, and electronic dance music. This influence shines in the remix.
