Ravi Coltrane’s quartet with Brandee Younger paid tribute to Alice Coltrane with a 90 minute performance. The spiritual jazz performance was primarily of compositions by Alice and her husband John Coltrane.

This one set, 90 minute set of set was paradoxically one of gentleness and power at the same time. This music was far from a straight ahead/post bop performance.
Ravi’s throaty tenor and soaring soprano tones gave flight to the music and led our ears to listen deeply into the music. Ravi’s tone is throaty in contrast to his father’s clear sound.
Brandee Younger’s harp was inspirational, an expansive mirror into the music’s soul. The plucking of the strings added wonder to the listener.
Davis Whitfield is a master of the keyboards. Comping where needed, delivering blistering solos where given the opportunity.
Ele’ Howell drums was the wonder that left our minds in amazement, he made the compositions swing like the older styles of jazz.

Rahsaan Carter’s confident bass playing gave a solid foundation.
Highly recommended band for the more adventurous jazz ear.
Thanks to Diane Ebbers for bringing this band to the band to the Egg and Arun Ramamurthy for curating the Resonance Series for The Egg.
