Saxophone legend James Casey’s Birthday Benefit Charity Auction began on Feb. 25, running through March 2 at 8 p.m., with all proceeds supporting colorectal cancer screening services for uninsured patients.

“Because colon cancer is almost always treatable when caught early, James shared his story in hopes that others might avoid his fate,” said Casey’s wife, Ayla Casey. “Thank you all for the continued support you’ve shown for James and this mission. We hope this initiative will make a positive impact on our community and amplify James’ message as we celebrate his life, music and legacy.”
In partnership with the Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH), the auction features exclusive collectors items donated by artists and friends of Casey. Some items include a custom signed guitar from Dave Matthews, VIP packages from Trey Anastasio, a signed copy of Bill Kreutzmann’s biography, original artwork by Jeff Coffin and more. All proceeds will be donated through Fight Colorectal Cancer (Fight CRC), an organization assisting civilians to have access to early detection methods for colorectal cancer.

In addition to the auction, ABGH will host a free, public virtual webinar titled “Your Health, Your Voice: Knowing the Signs of Colorectal Cancer and Taking Action.” This event includes conversations about colorectal cancer trends and risks, particularly among young people. This panel will include “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” bandleader Louis Cato and the first Black Radio City Music Hall Rockette and colorectal cancer survivor Jennifer Jones.
James Casey was a highly-acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist. With true passion and talent for his saxophone with Trey Anastasio Band and more, Casey brought records like A Little Something For Everyone (2022), a Christmas album featured on NPR’s “Jazz Night In America” holiday playlist. Casey passed at the age of 40 on Aug. 28, 2023 to colorectal cancer. Casey’s legacy and advocacy lives on with those who gain inspiration from and celebrate his craft and legacy in the music industry.
