The 16th annual Great American Irish Festival will be held on Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28 in Frankfort, New York. The Great American Irish Festival was established to raise funds for the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley. The festival organization’s purpose is to further the appreciation and understanding of Irish/Celtic music, culture, and history.
The Great American Irish Festival provides all types of entertainment throughout the weekend, including whiskey tasting, Irish cultural exhibits, a bagpipe competition as well as traditional and contemporary Irish music. This year’s event features twenty-one performers: Enter The Haggis, The High Kings, We Banjo 3, The Young Dubliners, Andy Cooney Band, Screaming Orphans, The Byrne Brothers, American Rogues, The Colin Farrell Band, The Town Pants, Searson, Glengarry Bhoys, Hair Of The Dog, House Of Hamill, Blarney Rebel Band, Craobh Dugan, Arise & Go, Down By The Glenside, Donal O’Shaughnessy, The Mighty Craic, Gerry Dixon, and Dierdre McCarthy.
Friday night and Saturday afternoon will host the return of the Highland Games, a centuries-old tradition of celebrating Celtic culture. It involves a large number of different male and female athletic tests of strength known as heavy competition. This includes the hurling of logs, stones, and hammers for distance measurement. A new addition this year will be “Family Fun Day,” to be held on Sunday, offering additional activities specifically designed for children and the entire family.
