Update: New Phish Album Release Date Announced

Update 9/15/16:

Phish has announced that their new album Big Boat will be released on Friday, Oct. 7. The album is now available for pre-order at the Phish Dry Goods Official Store; all orders for CD, vinyl and digital will be accompanied with an instant download of the track “Breath and Burning.” Orders for CD and vinyl in Phish’s Dry Goods Official Store will be delivered with a 36″ x 36″ poster of the album cover.

NPR Music’s All Things Considered debuted “Breath and Burning” on Monday and called the track a “breezy rocker punctuated by some classic soul horn lines and a joyful key-change in the chorus that hints at future jams.”

The Rolling Stone Fall Preview 2016 named the new Phish Album one of 35 “Must Hear Albums” coming out this year.

Shortly after the release of the record, Phish kicks off their fall tour, which starts at the North Charleston Coliseum in SC on Oct. 14 & 15. Full schedule for the fall tour  can be found below.

After a year of speculation and rumors following the initial announcement last August at a soundcheck, exciting new information continues to emerge regarding the new Phish album, which Jon Fishman has announced is mostly complete at Bernie Sander’s Commit to Vote Concert.

Trey Anastasio confirmed to fans during Phish’s three-night run in Mexico at the beginning of this year that the group would be working in the studio all of spring before their 2016 summer tour. Anastasio has recently discussed details of the new album, including the intriguing addition of percussionist/drummer, Andrés Forero, of the Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway musical, Hamilton.

According to an interview Forero gave to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Anastasio approached the unsuspecting Forero back in January when the group and their families attended a performance of Hamilton. Amidst the busy swarm, Forero at first didn’t recognize Anastasio, only catching that he was a fan of the play. Later on, realizing that he had met Trey Anastasio of Phish, he connected with the lead singer and they began to talk collaboration.

Initially Forero was to record three songs with Phish, but Forero told Democrat & Chronicle that the “synergy” between them was so strong, that in the end, he ended up being on every track of the new album. Another exciting tidbit of news that has emerged is that the group recorded a 15 minute piece with classical percussion. On Phish’s last studio recorded album, Fuego (2014), the longest track was nine minutes long.

The hope is that Forero will have a chance to perform with Phish live, however, with the storm Hamilton has created in the Broadway world, Forero’s schedule will be busy. This past Sunday, Hamilton was nominated for a record breaking 16 Tony Awards, winning 11.

Phish has also confirmed that they’re working with producer, Bob Ezrin, who worked with them on Fuego. During the announcement Fishman made at the Bernie Concert, he said that the new album will feature mostly songs that the fans have not yet heard, despite the fact that several new songs were debuted during the 2015 summer tour.

The album release date has not been announced.
