Several bands across New York State are contending for fan’s online votes, hoping to win a chance to perform at this year’s Gathering of the Vibes music festival from July 30-Aug. 2 at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT. The festival will be headlined this year by Gov’t Mule kingpin and longtime Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes, with George Porter Jr. and Branford Marsalis sharing some of the spotlight themselves.
Voting will end at the end of the day on Thursday, July 2, and can be accessed via the official Gathering of the Vibes Facebook Page, where fans can vote in the “Road to the Vibes” contest.
Among Empire State bands, The Blind Owl Band is the top contender to play at the festival, in fourth place as of Tuesday morning. Founded in 2010, the Adirondack Mountain contemporary bluegrass band hails from Saranac Lake, and has gained a reputation across the North Country for their unique string sound. The band plays a fast-paced style with a traditional 4-piece string band setup of a guitar, stand-up bass, banjo, and a mandolin, with vocals being traded between the instrumentalists.
The North and South Dakotas, a folk band from Saratoga Springs, are also in the running to play on the GOTV stage. The upstate band has a traditional acoustic sound that includes aspects of many genres –including country, bluegrass, and rock, with folk at the heart of their music.
Other New York bands looking for your vote include The WonderBeards, a folk rockband from Glens Falls, and The Spectacular Average Boys, an alternative rock/folk ensemble from the Catskills.
As of Tuesday morning, the band with the most votes was Relative Souls, the high energy Connecticut funk jam band, but lots of time remains to cast your vote for a New York representative in the popular summer festival.
