A Fine Folkin’ Fall at the State Theater

Taking a nice scenic drive down Cayuga Lake in autumn, red, orange and yellow lines the roadway while the early setting sun glimmers on the water. Walking down State Street in downtown Ithaca, the dead leaves crunch underfoot as you head under the marquee and into the gorgeously redone State Theater of Ithaca, with its dark reds and golden highlights.

The soundtrack to best accompany this scene is clearly that undefinable but know-it-when-you-hear-it sweet twang of folk music.

Right on cue, Dan Smalls Presents has lined up a full slate at the State Theater that leans heavily on just that.

Punctuated by two 50th anniversary celebrations, one for Arlo Guthrie’s famous Alice’s Restaurant and one for Gordon Lightfoot, the lineup also features current torch-bearers Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch, newgrass savants The Punch Brothers, as well as quasi-folk chanteuse Norah Jones. Singer-songwriters Patty Griffin and City and Colour round out the acoustic-minded portion. Straying off the folk path, also booked are Pink Floyd cover band The Machine, pop rockers Guster, Hasidic dancehall reggae artist Matisyahu, and Springsteen pals Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

The full line up is listed below. Tickets to all events can be purchased online or at the State Theater box office.
